Rasuwa / Bhotekoshi–Trishuli Flood — 26 August 2026

1. Situation overview

A flash flood surged down the Bhote Koshi (Bhotekoshi) in Rasuwa on the morning of 26 August 2026, with the surge reported coming from the Tibetan (China) side of the border. NDRRMA issued a high-alert advisory for riverbank residents and security agencies were mobilised for search and rescue. Preliminary assessments attribute the surge to an upstream trigger on the Tibetan (China) side of the border, with an ice avalanche among the suspected mechanisms and heavy rainfall reported upstream. Rasuwa’s Chief District Officer stated authorities cannot yet confirm whether a glacial lake burst upstream or another mechanism caused the sudden flood. The exact initiating mechanism remains UNDER INVESTIGATION. This event has NOT been confirmed as a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) by any competent scientific or government authority.

Reported affected settlements include Syabrubesi, Timure, Betrawati, Mailung, Trishuli and Battar; markets and settlements in Timure and Syabrubesi were reported damaged (local officials / Rasuwa District Administration, via media). Impacts on individual structures are not independently confirmed.

The Department of Roads reported that the ~42 km Betrawati–Rasuwagadhi road suffered extensive damage at multiple locations, with several concrete bridges swept away. 4. Critical infrastructure

Multiple hydropower projects along the corridor were reported damaged; press reports cite around eight operational projects (~354 MW combined), including the Rasuwagadhi (111 MW), Sanjen Khola (78 MW) and Upper Trishuli 3A (60 MW) projects. Project-level damage is not independently confirmed. Downstream highway disruption (Prithvi Highway / Muglin–Narayanghat) was warned by authorities.

5. Response activity

Search and rescue continued overnight into 27 August: the Nepali Army reported rescuing 88 people, with around 12 helicopters (Nepali Army and private) deployed and flights repeatedly disrupted by poor weather. Nepali Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police were mobilised; health workers were deployed and drones reported mobilised for damage mapping and locating stranded people (the Drone Association — a professional body, not a government agency). The Cabinet ordered free medical treatment for the injured (Ministry of Health / Army / govt hospitals), relief and relocation for the displaced, declared affected local units disaster crisis zones for three months, and set restoration priorities for roads, electricity and telecommunications. Downstream districts (Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan) were placed on alert.
