Rasuwa / Bhotekoshi–Trishuli Flood 2026
1. Executive situation summary
Five days after the 26 August glacial-origin flash flood, the response remains in active search, rescue and early recovery. Nepal Police reported 788 bodies recovered across affected districts at 15:00 NPT. NDRRMA separately reported 2,502 people unaccounted for and 8,730 rescued at 13:00 NPT. These agency-specific indicators are not merged. Nearly 20,000 security personnel were reported deployed, while specialised Nepali, Indian and Chinese teams advanced tunnel-rescue work at the Upper Trishuli complex. The Muglin–Kathmandu section of the Prithvi Highway remains blocked at Krishnabhir, with separate alternative routes designated for heavy and light vehicles. Communications restoration continues. NESRA Rapid EO Assessment v1 remains unchanged.

3. Data reconciliation
- Recovered bodies / remains: The earlier 734 was an NDRRMA recovered-remains snapshot at 09:00. Nepal Police subsequently reported 788 bodies recovered at 15:00. Neither is equated with a final confirmed death toll.
- Missing: NDRRMA revised the national unaccounted-for figure from 2,498 at 09:00 to 2,502 at 13:00. Foreign nationals and hydropower workers are subsets.
- Rescued: NDRRMA revised the figure from 8,186 at 09:00 to 8,730 at 13:00. The 7,514 value circulated in some reports belongs to an older Saturday 17:30 snapshot.
- Personnel: An older Saturday snapshot listed 18,708. The latest accessible Sunday update describes nearly 20,000 personnel without a complete exact breakdown, so approximate wording is retained.
4. Hazard and warning status
- NDRRMA reported that the Bhotekoshi had risen again on Sunday and urged precautions.
- One recently formed upstream lake was reported largely drained, while a second crater lake still required monitoring. Temporary drainage does not establish that secondary-hazard risk has ended.
- Rainfall, unstable slopes, debris and damaged monitoring infrastructure continue to complicate interpretation and operations.
5. Search, rescue and humanitarian response
- Nepal’s military airlifted dismantled heavy machinery to support access to the Upper Trishuli 3A/3B tunnel complex.
- Joint Nepali, Indian and Chinese specialised teams were reported assisting tunnel-rescue operations. Responders reached a tunnel entrance and began clearing debris.
- Two people were reported pulled from the mouth of a tunnel. Unconfirmed estimates of people remaining inside are not presented as facts.
- The earlier statement that no authoritative resumption had been identified is superseded: rescue activity continued despite renewed flooding and difficult conditions.
- The NDRRMA rescued and missing-person registry ↗ is continuously updated. FloodWatch does not republish a person-level database.
6. Access and critical infrastructure
- A roughly 20 m section of the Prithvi Highway at Krishnabhir remains collapsed and the Muglin–Kathmandu movement through that point is blocked pending technical assessment.
- Traffic authorities diverted heavy vehicles through the Naubise–Palung–Bhimphedi–Bhaise corridor and light vehicles/microbuses via Pharping. Verify present conditions before departure.
- Alternative light-vehicle access to Dhunche is distinct from reopening of the severely disrupted Betrawati–Rasuwagadhi / Timure–Syabrubesi corridor.
- NDRRMA reported 145 of 198 affected telecom towers restored at 29 August 10:00. On 30 August, Nepal Telecom reported seven key BTS sites restored in Rasuwa and Nuwakot. This does not imply universal coverage.
7. Earth Observation
NESRA Rapid EO Assessment v1 — unchanged
Uses Sentinel-2 imagery from 27 August with a pre-event reference, maps a flood/debris path and open-data intersections, and retains the approximately 4.1 km solid-cloud limitation. Mapped exposure is not verified structural damage. Earth Observation analysis remains attributed to Michael Hylind, NESRA Earth Observation.

Copernicus EMSR927: Ongoing, with four areas of interest and three products. Copernicus damage grading is not directly comparable with NESRA exposure metrics.
Sentinel Asia: Products dated 28 August include IWM value-added mapping using Planet imagery and an EOS-RS Sentinel-1 damage-proxy map. These are external products.
8. Key information gaps
- Final reconciled death and missing-person totals.
- Confirmed conditions and outcomes inside affected hydropower tunnels.
- Current stability of upstream impoundments and authoritative river status where gauges are damaged or offline.
- End-to-end passability of the primary Rasuwa border corridor.
- Field verification of exposed or damaged assets.

- माथिल्लो क्षेत्रमा बनेको एउटा ताल धेरै हदसम्म निकास भएको रिपोर्ट छ; अर्को crater lake को निगरानी अझै आवश्यक छ। अस्थायी निकासले जोखिम समाप्त भएको प्रमाणित गर्दैन।
- वर्षा, अस्थिर भिरालो, debris र क्षतिग्रस्त निगरानी पूर्वाधारले जोखिम मूल्याङ्कन र उद्धारलाई कठिन बनाएको छ।

- नेपाली सेनाले माथिल्लो त्रिशूली 3A/3B सुरुङ क्षेत्रमा पुग्न भारी उपकरण टुक्र्याएर हेलिकप्टरमार्फत ढुवानी गरेको छ।
- नेपाली, भारतीय र चिनियाँ विशिष्टीकृत टोलीले संयुक्त रूपमा सुरुङ उद्धारमा सहयोग गरिरहेको रिपोर्ट छ। एउटा प्रवेशद्वारमा पुगेर भग्नावशेष हटाउने काम सुरु भएको छ।
- सुरुङको मुखबाट दुई जनालाई निकालिएको रिपोर्ट छ। भित्र कति व्यक्ति छन् भन्ने अनुमान पुष्टि नभएकाले तथ्यका रूपमा दिइएको छैन।

- कृष्णभीरमा करिब 20 मिटर सडक भासिएपछि मुग्लिङ–काठमाडौं खण्ड अवरुद्ध छ र प्राविधिक मूल्याङ्कन जारी छ।
- भारी सवारीलाई नौबिसे–पालुङ–भीमफेदी–भैंसे र हलुका सवारी/माइक्रोबसलाई फर्पिङतर्फ पठाइएको छ। यात्रा अघि स्थानीय अवस्था जाँच गर्नुहोस्।
- धुन्चेसम्मको वैकल्पिक हलुका सवारी पहुँच खुल्नु मुख्य बेत्रावती–रसुवागढी / टिमुरे–स्याफ्रुबेसी मार्ग खुलेको अर्थ होइन।
- NDRRMA अनुसार 29 अगस्ट 10:00 सम्म प्रभावित 198 टावरमध्ये 145 सञ्चालनमा आएका थिए। 30 अगस्टमा नेपाल टेलिकमले रसुवा र नुवाकोटका 7 प्रमुख BTS site पुनर्स्थापित भएको जनाएको छ। यसले सबै क्षेत्रमा सेवा पूर्ण भएको जनाउँदैन।
